Embedded camera for SMT component alignment

Keynote by Jef Horijon (Kulicke & Soffa) and Eric Janssen (Prodrive)

In SMT pick and place system cameras are used to align the components accurately to the boards. In Kulicke & Soffa systems, in-the-flight vision is used to achieve highest output in combination with optimum accuracy. We present the development of a new embedded high speed camera, complying with tight mechanical and electrical constraints, comprising rigorous data compression and applying a new object fitting approach. The new camera concept enables handling of upcoming smallest, thinnest components and opens some new exiting functionalities. Next to the technical aspects, we will layout the co-design approach of the project and how we handled development and production responsibilities between Kulicke & Soffa and Prodrive.
